Indians notebook: Bruce Chen called up, Anthony Swarzak designated for assignment; Carl Willis joins Boston Red Sox as pitching coach

CLEVELAND: The Indians on Saturday officially purchased the contract of Bruce Chen and called him up from Triple-A Columbus to start Saturday against the Minnesota Twins.

That part had been known for a few days. It wasn’t known who would be the odd man out on the 40-man roster. That turned out to be relief pitcher Anthony Swarzak, who was designated for assignment.

He was acting as the eighth man in the bullpen. Swarzak had a 3.38 ERA in 13u2153 innings pitched this season.

“We explained to [Swarzak] that it wasn’t an indictment on him,” Francona said.
