CLEVELAND, Ohio -- For some athletes, the end can be daunting. Scott Atchison was at peace.
For a right-hander selected in the 49th round of the 1998 amateur draft, 17 years in the professional ranks -- he debuted in 1999 -- were more than enough.
He didn't care to latch on with a team as a spring training invitee and attempt to claim a bullpen spot as his 40th birthday approached. When the Indians cut ties with the reliever last June, he figured he'd give it one more try. It didn't work out in Minnesota, though, so at the end of the regular season, he called it a career.
