The role of utility infielder is in total flux in Indians land. Heading into Arizona, it was expected and accepted that either Michael Martinez or Erik Gonzalez was going to get the nod to be Terry Francona’s Swiss Army Knife. This was met with reactions ranging from “meh” to “ugh”, especially among the anti-Martinezists among us.
But on Sunday, there was a glimmer of hope. After not losing to the Chicago Cubs, Francona called young infielder Ronny Rodriguez, another candidate for the role, “really interesting”:
