DETROIT -- Manager Terry Francona can finally exhale. He has his security blanket back – an eight-man bullpen.
The Indians placed outfielder Austin Jackson on the disabled list before Tuesday night’s game against Detroit and recalled right-hander Shawn Armstrong from Class AAA Columbus. Armstrong, who opened the season with the Indians, gives Francona eight relievers.
Keeping the bullpen safe and strong is part of the foundation of Francona’s managerial beliefs. In other words, the more relievers the better.
“If something happens during a game with a position player, you can play a guy out of position,” said Francona.
