The Indians have acquired catcher Chris Gimenez from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations. Catcher Adam Moore has been designated for assignment in order to make room for Gimenez on the roster.
The team was in the market for a new backup catcher because Roberto Perez is on the disabled list with a thumb injury that could require surgery and put him on the shelf for months instead of weeks.
Gimenez, a 33-year-old, right-handed hitter, was playing for the Rangers' Double-A affiliate, with a 106 wRC+ in his first seven games of action this season after a brief DL stint due to a sore ankle.
