CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Indians reduced their magic number to clinch the American League Central Division to 3 on Friday by beating the Chicago White Sox, 10-4.
Cleveland's lead in the AL Central over the second-place Tigers remained at 7 with nine games to play. Detroit defeated Kansas City, 8-3. The Tigers hold the No. 2 wild card spot in the American League.
Any combination of Indians wins plus losses by the Tigers that is greater than or equal to 3 will clinch the division title for Cleveland.
The Indians (90-63) play Game 2 of their series against the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field on Saturday — the final home series of the regular season.
