DETROIT – Detroit manager Brad Ausmus thought Indians reliever Bryan Shaw might be scuffing the baseball when he was on the mound in the eighth inning Sunday at Comerica Park. Shaw was wearing a white rubber wedding ring on his left ring finger and rubbing the ball in his hands between pitches.
Shaw, of course, knew better.
"It's not like I had a nail sticking out of a rubber ring to scuff the ball," said Shaw. "I don't know where the ball is going anyway when I throw it."
Ausmus, his team trailing 6-3 and about to be swept in a three-game series, asked crew chief Gary Cederstrom to investigate.
