The Boston Red Sox have hired Carl Willis as their pitching coach, per multiple reports.
The Red Sox obtained permission to talk with Willis, 54, who was the Indians’ pitching coach in Triple-A Columbus, this week.
Willis was a pitching coach in the Indians system from 1997-2009 and worked with current Red Sox manager John Farrell, who was the director of player development from 2001-2006.
Willis went with Eric Wedge to the Seattle Mariners for four seasons but was fired, along with Wedge, after the 2013 season.
Indians manager Terry Francona said Saturday that the Indians knew they caught a break by being able to have Willis at the Triple-A level, and that he’d get a job in the major leagues eventually.
