Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard Iman Shumpert will make this season debut tonight against the Orlando Magic, barring any setbacks during shootaround and pre-game warmups.
“If we go through shootaround and everything is straight,” Shumpert said, “I’m going to try to give it a go.”
Shumpert is three weeks ahead of schedule in his recovery from offseason surgery to repair a torn sheath in his right wrist, which was supposed to keep him out until January. However, Shumpert warned against having high expectations for his play in his return.
“It’s going to be obvious that I haven’t played in a while,” he said. “I think I’ll be overly excited my first time up and down. I bring more good energy than bad energy. If my timing isn’t all the way there, it’ll be OK because I’m going to bring the energy.”
While the Cavs will be getting Shumpert back, they will be without guards Kyrie Irving and J.R. Smith against the Magic. Smith is recovering from an illness and is still in Cleveland, and Irving is still recovering from suffering a fractured kneecap in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
Neither player has been ruled out for Tuesday's game against the Boston Celtics.
