The Cleveland Cavaliers have been looking to add a backup point guard since Mo Williams retired and Matthew Dellavedova signed with the Milwaukee Bucks this offseason, and as such, they have been monitoring the trade market for available players. One of those players that could be on the trade block is Elfrid Payton, who the Orlando Magic are willing to part with.
According to Fansided's Quenton Albertie, Payton is "destined" to end up in Cleveland:
Elfrid Payton is only 22-years-old but the Orlando Magic are reportedly down on the 10th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. They’re now willing to trade the third-year point guard. ...
Within the Cleveland Cavaliers second unit, Payton is a terrific fit offensively as well as the bench is full of catch-and-shoot specialists in need of a player to set them up and take advantage of the space they offer with their three-point shooting. Converting his shots around the rim at a 61.3 percent rate, Payton is in a great position to do that.
Whether or not Payton is a point guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers by the trade deadline, the Orlando Magic have a player in Payton who can be exactly the type of player the Cavs need. Last year, the Cavs took Channing Frye off the Magic’s hands in a move that let the latter shed salary and eventually sign Biyombo in the summer. The Magic will want more in this deal and with what the Cavs can offer on terms of perimeter shooting and young assets, more is what they’ll get in a trade with Cleveland.
Cleveland has been willing to part with backup shooting guard Iman Shumpert, hoping to save some luxury tax by dealing his contract. Albertie also mentions that the Magic might be interested in Mike Dunleavy Jr., Cleveland's first round pick, Jordan McRae or Cedi Osman.
Payton is averaging 11.6 points with 5.7 assists in 28.6 minutes per game. He is also shooting just 25.6 percent from three-point range.
