The Cleveland Cavaliers are facing a crucial offseason this summer with LeBron James' future with the franchise in question, and obviously, the Cavs are expected to do whatever they can to ensure he re-signs with the team.
Cleveland has held onto the Brooklyn Nets' first-round pick they required in the Kyrie Irving trade to protect their future should James leave, but there's also a chance they use that as part of a trade package for a superstar if James chooses to stay.
They're expected to pursue a trade for a few All-Star caliber players, namely Kawhi Leonard should the San Antonio Spurs make him available, but there's a good chance they land Portland Trail Blazers star C.J. McCollum, according to FanSided's Quenton S. Albertie:
With the Portland Trail Blazers being swept by the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round of the playoffs, prying shooting guard C.J. McCollum from the Blazers roster should be on the Cleveland Cavaliers shortlist of offseason objectives.
All that said, fans should get ready and expect McCollum’s name to join Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Kemba Walker and even Lillard as players that the Cavaliers try to acquire in the offseason. Players that they’ll try to pair with LeBron James to create a 1-2 punch with a lot more power than what they currently have.
Of course, if the team gets the feeling that James will leave in free agency, they will opt to hold onto the pick to help a potential rebuilding, likely ending their pursuit of a trade for a superstar.
McCollum, a Cleveland-native, averaged 21.4 points and 3.4 assists per game in the regular season.
