We’re in the beginning stages of the Cleveland Cavaliers' offseason preparations, and there are plenty of plots and subplots to follow during July’s free agent push. Here's the latest on their free agency plans:
Kevin Love signs five-year, $110 million deal with Cleveland
Kevin Love announced on Wednesday that he will sign a five-year, $110 million deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers in an article called “Unfinished Business” on The Players’ Tribune.
“I’m going back to Cleveland,” Love wrote. “After Game 1 of the NBA Finals, that’s when it really struck me. Sitting on the sidelines, I never wanted to play in a game more than that one. I had dreamed of playing in the NBA Finals and I just wanted to help my guys win. I couldn’t have been prouder of them as they poured their blood, sweat and tears onto the court…At the end of the day, and after meeting with my teammates (it turns out pools are great meeting places) and with the front office, it was clear Cleveland was the place for me.”
The former All-Star opted out of his contract this summer to become a free agent, and there was speculation that he may leave Cleveland for the Los Angeles Lakers. However, Cleveland always expected to re-sign him.
Iman Shumpert signs four-year, $40 million deal with Cleveland
The Cavs are keeping starting shooting guard Iman Shumpert as both sides agreed to a four-year, $40 million deal. Shumpert had received some interest from other teams, but there was no real contest for his services.
Cavs reach out to Tayshaun Prince
Cleveland reached out to Tayshaun Prince at the start of free agency, targeting him as someone who can give the Cavs more wing depth. The Cavaliers are hoping to pitch the 35-year-old on the idea of playing for a contender as his career winds down, though Prince has been quiet about his plans.
Cleveland discussing Brandon Haywood trade with Spurs
The Cavs are trying to unload Brandon Haywood's non-guaranteed $10.5 million contract for next season, and they're talking with the Spurs about a potential deal. The trade would send Boris Diaw and Patty Mills to the Cavs, while San Antonio would waive Haywood to create even more cap space to sign LaMarcus Aldridge and others.
