The atmosphere in Cleveland was electric before the start of tonight's game, and the Cavs came out accordingly. New addition Kevin Love carried the Cavaliers to a 25-18 lead after the first quarter, but from there the New York Knicks started to find their groove.
They stepped their defense up in the second quarter, holding Cleveland to just 39 points over the next two quarters, and led the Cavs 67-64 going into the 4th quarter.
New York extended in their lead in the final frame before Cleveland mounted a furious rally that ultimately fell short, as the Knicks made enough plays down the stretch to come away with the victory.
Turning Point: New York went on a 11-1 run halfway through the 4th quarter that turned a one point deficit into an nine point lead, which Cleveland was unable to overcome.
Key Stat: 19. That's how many turnovers the Cleveland Cavaliers had in this game, eight of which game from LeBron James. We knew the Cavs' new roster was going to need time to gel, but they were sloppy tonight. They were often trying to do too much, so look for head coach David Blatt to simplify things next game.
Cleveland MVP: Kevin Love had the kind of game every player hopes to have in their first game with a new team, even in the loss. He put up 19 points and 14 rebounds, and was Cleveland's only consistent offensive threat in this game.
New York MVP: Carmelo Anthony took over the game and did everything he needed to do for the Knicks to come out with a win. He finished with 25 points and hit a plethora of big shots to help New York extend their lead in the 4th quarter.
What’s Next? The Cavs have a quick turnaround and will travel to Chicago to face the Bulls tomorrow night. New York has two days off to recover before facing Charlotte at home Sunday.
