The world of the Cleveland Cavs has been so besieged by rumors surrounding superstar guard Kyrie Irving and his feelings about playing in Cleveland, that one of the Cleveland Cavaliers' key acquisitions this offseason, Luol Deng, has been treated as a relative afterthought.
Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer doesn't see that trend ending this offseason when it comes to the possibility of retaining Deng for the 2014-15 NBA season:
"Assuming he returns as general manager, one of David Griffin's first goals will be to find a veteran small forward for next season. He will talk to Deng, a free agent, about returning, but the contract offer will be rather modest. A good guess is Deng will want to play for a contender."
Whether David Griffin thinks that Luol Deng fits into his vision of the Cleveland Cavs' future or not, most indications surrounding the Cavs give them only the slimmest of shots in retaining Deng.
Pluto agrees with this interpretation, stating that "the Cavs will likely have to shop elsewhere. But Deng demonstrated how an experienced and reasonably productive small forward can affect this team."
