The Cleveland Cavaliers have been more engaged in trade talks that perhaps any other team in the league this offseason, leading us to believe that the Cavs could very well pull off a trade in the next few weeks. They're looking to improve their roster to keep pace with the Golden State Warriors, and there are several moves that will help. Here are three possible trades the Cavs could (and maybe should) make this offseason:
1) Trade for Paul George in blockbuster three-team deal
This is obviously the goal for the Cavs, as they think George will allow them to better match up with Golden State's versatile attack. Cleveland being so far over the luxury tax threshold makes a trade difficult for both sides, which is why the Cavs are trying to get a third team involved that would take on Kevin Love's max contract. Given that there are reports that George would commit to Cleveland long term - something he previously said he would only do for the Lakers - should give the Cavs a bit more resolve to get a deal done.
2) Trade Iman Shumpert for Danny Green
Undoubtedly the least "splashy" of the three trades on this list, adding Danny Green would certainly be a positive for the Cavs. With Kyle Korver entering free agency, Green would replace Korver's shooting while also being a huge upgrade defensively. Shumpert has seen his role decrease each of the last few years, and Cleveland is trying to unload his contract. Plus, Green would bring a lot of championship experience with him.
3) Acquire Carmelo Anthony
Getting Carmelo from the Knicks is going to be tricky for the Cavs. With Cleveland in the luxury tax and Anthony signed to a max contract, the Cavs are going to have to give up a max player (or players whose contracts total the same amount) to make a trade work. Of course, that makes Love a prime candidate to be dealt, but New York hasn't shown any interest in him to this point. Anthony also doesn't want to waive his no-trade clause.
The Knicks could buy out his contract, which is something they didn't want to. As such, the Cavs should have to trade for him, making the acquisition of Carmelo unlikely at this time.
