There have been plenty of rumors swirling around the Cleveland Cavaliers and potential trades this offseason, and while they haven't pulled the trigger on a deal yet, there is momentum surrounding a couple of moves heading into training camp and the start of the regular season. Here are three players the Cavs could make a deal for this year:
Taj Gibson
Gibson appears to be the odd man out of Chicago's big man rotation thanks to the emergence of Nikola Mirotic, and Cleveland could use another big man with the absence of Tristan Thompson. He hasn't signed his one-year tender offer and is holding out for a near-max contract the Cavs just simply don't want to give him. Trading for Gibson would give them another extremely productive rebounder and erase the blow of not having Thompson in the lineup.
Robin Lopez
Who says no to a trade between the Knicks and Cavs centered around Lopez and Thompson?
Thompson has seemingly priced the Cavs out and wants to join another team this offeseason, while Lopez is a cheaper option that would give the Cavs another top-notch, seven-foot defensive presence in the post. New York would bank on the fact that they would be able to re-sign Thompson, but Cleveland would gladly give some money to Lopez, who’s a proven commodity in the league and a great locker room guy.
K.J. McDaniels
McDaniels was one of the most promising young rookies in the league, but the Rockets didn't let him hit the free agency market. He’s already a good defender, and his elite athleticism would flourish in Cleveland’s up-tempo system. He's someone Cleveland might be able to get for cheap while Shumpert deals with a wrist injury that will keep him out for at least three months.
