Marla Ridenour: With help from baseball and basketball, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam finally getting a grasp of the football business

I was totally wrong about the Browns’ coaching search.

I thought if there were seven openings in the NFL, they would get the seventh-best candidate. Even with the attraction of a rabid fan base and the second pick in the draft, I didn’t believe anyone but an unknown coordinator would want to work for owner Jimmy Haslam, who has fired three coaches since taking over in October 2012.

Then the Browns landed Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, shooting down my dire prediction.

In digesting Jackson’s introductory press conference Wednesday, not only do I feel good about his chances for longevity in Cleveland, I feel good about Haslam’s growth and understanding of his role and the running of an NFL franchise.
