The year before, the Browns went 7-6-1 and failed to make the playoffs for the fourth year in a row. Owner Art Modell wanted changes to be made, but his head coach Paul Brown was dead set on the duties of the coach taking care of the players and other coaches, and the owner should be involved in advertising and promotional situations.
