Calvin Pryor's acquisition will not lead to immediate shift to 4-2-5 defense

The Browns made a trade on Thursday that could give defensive coordinator Gregg Williams some options — but don't expect it to lead to an immediate focus on a 4-2-5 alignment.

On the surface, the Demario Davis for Calvin Pryor trade adds depth to a position of need at safety but leaves the Browns one player short of a starting unit at linebacker.

With the move of Chris Kirksey to weak side linebacker, Davis had been penciled in as the starter inside in Williams' base four-three. There really were no other experienced or evident options.

But the Browns decided that with Davis in the final year of his contract, with Kirksey and Jamie Collins emerging as players and leaders, and with the need at safety it was worth bringing in Pryor, a former first-round pick who needs a fresh start to revive his career.
