Browns notebook: Coach Mike Pettine provides reality check after cornerback Justin Gilbert labels his preseason opener ‘flawless’

After Thursday’s preseason opener, Browns second-year cornerback Justin Gilbert stood outside the home locker room at FirstEnergy Stadium and described his performance in a 20-17 defeat to Washington as “flawless” with the exception of one blown coverage.

“He made that statement without having seen the film,” Browns coach Mike Pettine deadpanned Friday during a conference call.

It’s safe to bet that Gilbert is the only person on this planet who would slap the “flawless” label on his night. But that was his assessment, save for the play on the game’s opening series when he got caught looking into the backfield and allowed receiver Pierre Garcon to zoom right by him uncovered.
