Prior to the arrival of DC Jim Schwartz, the Cleveland Browns defense was mostly toothless beyond the stellar play of DE Myles Garrett. Even Garrett was limited as teams threw double and triple-team blockers at him regularly. The Browns defense under DC Joe Woods was mostly known for soft coverage and blown assignments along with a porous run defense.
Schwartz’s arrival catapulted the defense into the top unit in the league, along with a few key additions to the roster. The veteran coordinator doesn’t win Assistant Coach of the Year without players but his scheme was one that worked beautifully.
