2017 NFL Draft: Mitchell Trubisky’s goal to end quarterback curse of hometown Browns fueled him as he waited to start in college

When Mentor native Mitchell Trubisky was a freshman at the University of North Carolina in 2013, he talked to Keith Heckendorf about his goal to one day join his hometown Browns and halt their revolving door of starting quarterbacks.

The discussion could prove to be prophetic Thursday during the first round of the NFL Draft.

“One of the things we joked about was, ‘Someday you’re going to be the quarterback that breaks the curse and ends the streak in Cleveland,’” Heckendorf, North Carolina’s passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, told the Beacon Journal recently by phone. “It’s been in the back of his mind ever since he came to the University of North Carolina with the dream of being an NFL quarterback, and now he’s got a chance to possibly do it.
