After a slow start, the Browns have finally started making a few moves in free agency with the signing of former Saints SS Usama Young and former Packers RB Brandon Jackson. They've also agreed to terms keeping franchise K Phil Dawson and RFA TE Evan Moore aboard for another season.
Initially, the signing of Jackson is the most intriguing. Already possessing the 1-2 punch of Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty, it will be interesting to how they plan to use Jackson. He could be signed as insurance against another Hardesty injury, or to be a third down back due to his pass catching ability and blocking skills.
There are definitely bigger areas of need for the team, but this move makes sense. Plus, at 2 years 4.5 million it's not a big commitment.
The team still has a lot of work to do though. They are rumored to be in the running for Vikings DE Ray Edwards, who would be a perfect fit as a veteran 4-3 end to compliment 2nd round pick Jabaal Sheard. Theoretically they should be in the market for secondary help, offensive line depth, and the fabled 'veteran WR' that they deny they are interested in.
Should be a fun Friday and weekend, even though the team has they don't expect to make a huge splash in free agency. There is still the issue of their existing free agents they can sign back including Lawrence Vickers, and Eric Wright.
We'll be following all of the moves right here, and especially follow us on twitter @chatbrowns all throughout the day tomoorrow.
