Following Clemson’s 9-4 victory over Maine on Saturday, Clemson pitcher Clate Schmidt went over to speak to his mother and father after the game like he always does. When they greeted him, they greeted him with tears.
It was just over eight months ago, the Schmidts were with their son when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Now they were with him as he walked on the mound after being the cancer.
They witnessed him pitch five strong innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out five batters. Of the 77 strikes he threw, 53 were strikes.
