Former Clemson, Alabama Assistant Passes

A former Clemson and Alabama assistant coach, Bill Oliver, has passed away at the age of 85, according to multiple reports Monday.

Oliver coached at Clemson from 1986–89. He was Clemson’s defensive coordinator in 1989 and served as defensive backs coach the other years.

Oliver was part of Clemson’s three straight ACC Championship teams from 1986-88.

In 1989, he was the defensive coordinator for a defense that featured Levon Kirkland, Ashley Sheppard, Chester McGlockton, James Trapp and Ed McDaniel. That unit was a top-10 defense nationally and top-five run defense.

In Oliver’s final game as DC at Clemson in the 1989 Gator Bowl, he helped Clemson shut down Heisman Finalist Major Harris in Clemson’s 27-7 win over West Virginia.
