The opening game is now upon us. Clemson once again has a shot at another special season. Saturday the Tigers will roll out so new toys while looking to prepare for games in the heart of the schedule.
Clemson's Offense vs Wofford's Defense
The Tigers will be facing the Terriors' 3-4 defense. Consider this a tune up for their matchup with the Louisville Cardinals in week 3 who also run the 3-4. Look for Clemson to develop consistency with both the run and the pass. Deshaun Watson will want to show he has put his knee injury in the rear view and knock off the rust after missing a good bit of time. The Tigers desperately need to protect him with a Oline that has a few question marks. Look for Clemson to show a heavy dose of Wayne Gallman and quick, short passes to Tay Scott and going deep to Mike Williams. Freshman Ray Ray Mcloud and Deon Cain will also look to show out in their first game.
Wofford's Offense vs Clemson's Defense
Like the Terrior offense will prep the Tigers for Louisville, the Mike Ayers offense will prep them for the GT option offense. The Wofford option offense can present problems as we saw the last the they came to Death Valley in 2011. The Terriors return 10 starters led by running back Lorenzo Long. Ben Bolware and TJ Burrell should rack up a lot of tackles. The Tigers Dline also desperately needs the experience of game action to prove they aren't going to be a weak link.
Special Teams
The Tigers will be trying out a lot of new players on special teams. A 1st time starting kicker, Greg Huegel, and punter, Andy Teasdall. These 2 have to prove they can perform when they are called to do so. Also, freshmen Ray Ray McCloud should get a chance to return punts and kicks. He can be a difference maker.
Prediction
The most important thing Saturday is for the Tigers to get lots of bodies in. Dabo needs to get as many guys as possible some game experience. This also gets your starters out and keeps then from injury. Against Wofford this is no given as the last time these two faces the Tigers escaped with a 35-27 win. The Terriors can be pesky but Clemson should be able to win comfortably. Prediction: Clemson wins 47-19.
