Clemson Tigers vs Louisville Cardinals Preview and Prediction

Clemson will face what many believe to be their first true test Thursday night. Though Louisville has gotten off to a slow start Papa John's Stadium is not an easy place to play on a Thursday night. If the Tigers start slow, the Cardinals could jump out to a quick lead and gain early momentum.

Clemson's Offense vs Louisville's Defense

The Cardinals lost alot of talent along their defensive line and it has shown. They have been unable to be effective against the run. The Tigers haven't been stellar running the football but Wayne Gallman and Deshaun Watson could have good rushing days. Louisville likes to force turnovers as evidence by safety Josh Harvey-Clemons' 2 interceptions. Watson will need to continue his good decision making. Look for another big game for Charone Peake and Tay Scott.

Louisville's Offense vs Clemson's Defense

Louisville has been breaking in true freshman quarterback Lemar Jackson. He hasn't been good throwing the ball completing only 55% of his passes and a 1-3 touchdown to interception ratio. He has been effective running the ball. Look for Clemson to play a lot of guys close to the line of scrimmage to stop the run and force Jackson to pass. If the Tigers are successful they should be able to create a few turnovers. Also, Jackson may be replaced as the starter by Kyle Bolin. Bolin came in late in their last game and was successful and is a pocket passer. Bobby Petrino will likely play both and maybe even play Reggie Bonafon.

Special Teams

Alex Spence will get his first taste of a tough road environment. He needs to make the most of his opportunities as field goals could be very important early in the game and especially late. in the return game, Tay Scott had a big return last week and is poised to have a punt return for a TD. Plus, the Cardinals gave a up a kick return for a TD just this past weekend. Louisville just hasn't been good on special teams so far.

X-Factor

The start will be the key to Thursday night's game. If Clemson plays poorly early and let's Louisville get ahead by 7-10 points it will be a struggle. If the Tigers start well and get out front early they should be able to get the crowd out of the game.

Prediction

Last year when these two faced the game came down to a goal line stand. This game should look a lot different. Clemson will bring pressure to Jackson and/or Brolin forcing them to make bad decisions. On offense, the Tigers have too many weapons for the Cardinals to matchup with. Clemson wins 37-19.
