The past few weeks Clemson's defense has stepped up and played much better than it had at the beginning of the season. During the defense's improved play, Freshman Travis Blanks has seen more action. Blanks has used his natural ability and flexibility to play multiple positions to help a defense that had been struggling.
Blanks arrived at Clemson with many accolades. He was the #2 safety recruit in the country last year and a U.S. Army All-American. He has the ability to play safety and cornerback at a high level. His expectations got a little bigger when he enrolled early at Clemson. He used the experience he received in spring practice to a roll as a hybrid safety linebacker position. Blanks is a very good tackler in addition to being good in coverage. Throughout the season his role has increased.
Blanks has not only received steady playing time but has played the majority of the defensive snaps in 2 of the past 3 games. There have been questions about Clemson's ability with or without their depth issues in the secondary. But Blanks has stepped up and played well. He may not have any interceptions yet, that will come with time, but he has broken up a few passes and has yet to give up the big play. As a freshman he is not making any big mistakes.
Blanks will continue to grow in Venables defense. He should continue to get quite a bit of playing time for the remainder of the season. He has a natural ability to play defense and has a presence of a veteran player. Blanks is the most talented player of anyone in the secondary and with a little time he could be one of the best ever at Clemson.
