Former Clemson Tigers head coach Tommy Bowden has no problems with former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice from a political perspective.
However, when it comes to her placement on the inaugural College Football Playoff selection committee, Bowden is less than impressed.
"If the selection committee wants to get it right, and find the most knowledgeable people about the sport of football, go get people who played the game and preferably coached the game," Bowden said at Monday's Knoxville Quarterback Club meeting, via Chris Thomas of Go Vols Xtra. "... But just because she likes to watch football doesn't necessarily mean she knows anything about football."
Rice is the only woman on the 13-member selection committee. The panel will reveal their first set of top-25 rankings on Tuesday at 7:30pm EST (ESPN).
Twice named the most powerful woman in the world by Forbes Magazine, Rice currently works as a professor of political economy and political science at Stanford University. She is also one of just two women to have been granted membership at Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters Tournament.
Bowden still isn't convinced that she's qualified to hold the fate of the first-ever College Football Playoff in her hands.
"I'm a big Condoleezza Rice fan," Bowden said. "I'm Christian Conservative. I'd vote for her for President. I don't necessarily agree that she should be on the committee."
Bowden hasn't coached since being fired by Clemson in 2008. He is currently an analyst for FOX Sports South and the ACC Network.
