Unless you’ve been living under Howard’s Rock for the past week, you should know that Brent Venables is the new defensive coordinator for Clemson’s football team. And since Venables is going to be the new guy in town its only right that Tiger fans know more about the fresh face.
Venables was hired almost a week after it was confirmed that Kevin Steele would not be returning to Clemson. During a press conference that was held January 13th, Head Coach Dabo Swinney said that Steele’s leaving was something they both agreed was best. Swinney also noted that the outcome of the Orange Bowl had nothing to do with this decision. But whatever the reason, what’s most important is that Brent Venables is now on the roster and will hopefully be beneficial for the Tigers next season.

Brent Venables coached at Oklahoma University for 13 seasons, so he is no doubt experienced. During his time with the Sooners he served as a defensive coordinator, linebackers coach, and also as associate head coach. Twelve of his players have been drafted into the NFL like Clint Ingram and Keenan Clayton. He’s also coached 18 bowl games throughout his career, including the 2011 Fiesta Bowl and the 2009 BCS Championship with Oklahoma.
I feel Venables will be a great addition to Clemson’s football program. He seems to be really passionate about and dedicated to bettering the Tigers’ defense. He wants to ensure that Clemson lessens the amount of points they give up and that what happened at this year’s Orange Bowl never happens again. And taking early shots at a Gamecock shows that Venables is definitely “all in”. He said Steve Spurrier Jr., his friend and South Carolina’s receivers coach, sounded a “little bit jealous” of him working with Clemson.
So after only a few days of holding the position Venables is already showing his tiger pride! That has to be a good sign right? And who knows, maybe Brent Venables will bring as many effective changes to the Clemson Tigers’ defense as Chad Morris brought to the offense.
