Former Cincinnati Reds fan favorite Brandon Phillips likely will hear speculation that his retirement from baseball is imminent after the 37-year-old - a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner - failed to make the Boston Red Sox's 25-man postseason roster, according to multiple reports, and cleaned out his locker.
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has until later this week to name his roster, and Phillips wasn't projected to be among the team's 14 position players.
Phillips hit .130 in 27 plate appearances for the Red Sox after they signed him in June and promoted him in early September from Triple-A Pawtucket.
