Why the Cincinnati Reds moved Vladimir Gutierrez from the starting rotation to the bullpen

PITTSBURGH –– After Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez allowed the most earned runs in MLB through six starts, the Reds had a decision to make.

They could keep Gutierrez, who was one of the best rookie starters in baseball for a few months in 2021, in the rotation and let him work through a few significant mechanical adjustments. They could option him to Triple-A. Or they could move him to the bullpen.

Reds Manager David Bell said he thought that Gutierrez can still help the Reds win games, and he saw an opportunity for Gutierrez to develop on the MLB roster.
