The Reds' series-opening, 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks in Arizona was tough to swallow after Cincinnati had rallied in the top of the 8th inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Corbin Carroll's homer off of Reds reliever Alex Young in the bottom of the 8th swung the momentum back in favor of the D'backs, but the Reds still had the top of the 9th to try to scratch across a run and tie the game.
Elly De La Cruz led off the 9th against Arizona closer Paul Sewald, and Reds fans were encouraged as De La Cruz fouled off seven pitches and worked the count to 2-2 as Sewald offered the 10th pitch of the at-bat.
