Tyler Mahle has delivered a quality start in his last three outings and each of them have ended in losses after bullpen meltdowns.
Tony Santillan, the Reds’ leader in saves, coughed up a two-run lead in the top of the ninth inning during a 5-4 loss in Thursday’s series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The rally started with a five-pitch walk, a wild pitch and an RBI single to center field.
Santillan compounded his jam when he made a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt. He attempted to throw out the lead runner at second base, the eventual tying run, and it was wide enough that it took shortstop Kyle Farmer off the bag.
