The Toronto Blue Jays announced Monday that they will pay tribute to the life and legacy of Tony Fernandez with a commemorative No. 1 uniform patch for the 2020 season.
Fernandez, a five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glover at shortstop who collected 2,276 hits with a .288 batting average over 17 seasons from 1983 to 2001, died in February at age 57.
Fernandez, who spent 12 of his 17 big-league seasons with the Blue Jays, played for the Cincinnati Reds in 1994 - hitting .279 in 422 plate appearances while playing mostly at third base.
