If you thought Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field’s 32 ½-year life was short, especially considering the 58-year existence of its predecessor, Crosley Field, then consider this – Crosley’s predecessor, a ballpark officially known as League Park but popularly referred to as The Palace of the Fans, had been in use for only 10 years when it was deemed outdated.
That was during the 1911 season, which opened with Cincinnati’s 14-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in front of a crowd so large that there were more fans standing behind ropes in the outfield than were seated in the stands.
