Five-time Major League Baseball All-Star Tony Fernandez, who collected 2,276 hits with a .288 batting average over 17 seasons from 1983 to 2001 and also won four Gold Gloves at shortstop, died Saturday night at age 57.
Fernandez suffered a stroke while he was being treated for kidney disease, according to Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z101.
Fernandez played 12 of his 17 seasons for the Toronto Blue Jays. He played for the Cincinnati Reds in 1994 - hitting .279 in 422 plate appearances while playing mostly at third base.
