With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, after Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Tyler Mahle allowed a single and then threw his 106th pitch of the game to walk Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, Mahle stayed on the mound.
Reds manager David Bell had pitching coach Derek Johnson go out for a mound visit as reliever Reiver Sanmartin warmed up in the bullpen. The Reds were trailing by two runs, and Mahle didn’t have a win on the line in the inning. But the Reds still needed him to finish the sixth.
On Tuesday, the Dodgers beat the Reds, 8-2, in front of a crowd of 18,476 at Great American Ball Park.
