In the wake of the disappointing end to the Cincinnati Reds season, it’s fair to ask:
How do you fix the offense?
The Reds were shut out over 22 innings by the Atlanta Braves in the two-game sweep. The Reds set a Major League Baseball record for offensive futility in the postseason.
Not scoring over 22 innings is extreme, but the Reds did not hit consistently this season. They finished with a .211 team batting average – the worst in baseball. They were shut out seven times this season.
That came after the club spent $149 million in the offseason trying to upgrade the offense, signing second baseman Mike Moustakas (four years, $64 million), right fielder Nick Castellanos (four years, $64 million) and left fielder Shogo Akiyama (three years, $21 million).
