Sonny Gray’s debut with the Reds did not go like he wanted, not at all like he wanted.
Gray, the right-hander obtained from the New York Yankees, went 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked four, struck out none and hit a batter. He threw 71 pitches, only 34 of which were strikes.
Gray cost himself a run in the first. He was a bit late getting to first on Starling Marte’s grounder to first baseman Joey Votto. Gray dropped Votto’s throw for an error. Marty stole second and scored an out later on Josh Bell’s single.
