When Sonny Gray flew to Goodyear, Arizona, on Sunday night, he was still weighing his options on whether he wanted to sign a multi-year contract with the Reds. Without signing it, the trade with the Yankees would’ve collapsed.
Gray took his physical Monday morning, then chatted with Reds players working out at the Spring Training complex and Dick Williams, the club’s president of baseball operations. Listening to all of them, Gray said it just felt right.
Once he approved, the Reds added their third starting pitcher of the offseason and Gray bypassed free agency next year to sign a three-year, $30.
