Two Reds players are offering an excellent example of how variance in defense and luck can dramatically skew batting statistics. We know that Scooter Gennett is having a terrific season. In fact, he was named the NL Player of the Week today for his performance last week. On the other hand, it is well known that Adam Duvall is struggling at the plate.
Gennett is batting .329, Duvall just .179.
Duvall walks and strikes out more. The power numbers (ISO) are even. When you add hard-hit and medium-hit balls together, the two batters are the same. Gennett has hit more line drives and ground balls.
