The Cincinnati Reds are pursuing an extension for New York Yankees starting pitcher Sonny Gray before the two teams finalize a trade, according to a report via Twitter from Jon Heyman of Fancred and MLB Network.
If the Reds can't reach an agreement for an extension before a deadline set for the end of the day on Monday, per Heyman, the Yankees might instead pursue a deal with another team.
Heyman's earlier report via Twitter mentioned Reds prospect Shed Long as part of a package the Reds would return to the Yankees.
Last week, Heyman reported that Gray was close to being traded, but a trade partner wasn't mentioned in Heyman's report.
