For 24 hours last November, any team in baseball could sign Aristides Aquino. The Reds had non-tendered him, basically making him a free agent.
The club intended to re-sign Aquino. But the non-tender put him at risk. Aquino was non-tendered on Nov. 30. The same day as Billy Hamilton. The Reds needed to clear roster spots for the moves that would come a bit later.
But for 24 hours or so, they could have lost Aquino. Can you imagine the social media uproar if Aquino had become the first player in modern MLB history with 10 home runs in his first 16 career games for another team?
