CHICAGO – Before a game earlier this month, Reds manager Jim Riggleman emphasized to players to look toward third-base coach Billy Hatcher during each at-bat.
With injuries to left-handed hitters Joey Votto, Scott Schebler and Jesse Winker, Riggleman wanted to try to create extra runs on the base paths. That meant more hit-and-run plays.
The Reds, in an era of the long ball, are trying to make the most of each batter that reaches base.
