GOODYEAR, Ariz. – When Tony Santillan threw off the mound last season, he said he felt pain in his right ankle as he pushed off the rubber.
For the last five months of the 2020 season, Santillan ignored that pain. In the process, he made his major league debut, showed flashes in the Reds starting rotation and then became one of their best relievers in the second half of the season.
“I was a little limited,” Santillan said. “But I figured a way out.”
Following offseason ankle surgery, Santillan’s ankle is back to 100%. He entered spring training as one of the most versatile and important pitchers on the Reds roster.
