Reds right-handed pitching prospect Tyler Mahle threw a perfect game for Double-A Pensacola on Saturday, using just 89 pitches in a 1-0 victory over the Mobile BayBears.
Mahle struck out eight BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Angels.
It was Mahle’s second no-hitter of his career. Last June, Mahle threw a no-hitter at high-A Daytona, facing the minimum in that game, as well, but hit a batter.
Mahle was ranked the Reds’ No. 12 prospect by Baseball America before the season.
Mobile starter Tyler Carpenter was nearly as good, retiring the final 19 Blue Wahoos he faced after giving up two hits in the second inning, an Aristides Aquino double and an RBI single by catcher Joe Hudson.
