Notes: Drew Storen thriving pitching backward

Throughout spring training, new Cincinnati Reds reliever Drew Storen had to field periodic questions about his lowered velocity. After his fastball averaged 94 mph two years ago, he was sitting mostly 88-90 mph in spring.

He wasn’t worried, he maintained. He’d never depended on throwing the ball hard. He’d be fine.

Two weeks into the regular season, Storen has yet to be proved wrong. His fastball is averaging 90 mph. He has a 1.23 ERA in 7 u2153 innings, and has struck out nine in that span. Tuesday, he struck out the side in the ninth inning on just nine pitches.
