CLEVELAND – When new Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Ross Detwiler made his debut with the team on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he had to face the heart of the Pirates order and throw two pitches that he had hardly used in the big leagues.
Detwiler, a 36-year-old left-hander, made his Major League debut in 2007. He bounced between being a starting pitcher and a long reliever, and he mostly threw a fastball, a sinker and a curveball.
After he posted a 4.64 ERA in 2021, Detwiler contemplated retirement. When he signed with the Reds, Detwiler got an opportunity to show that he could be a completely different style of pitcher.
