MONTERREY, Mexico – After St. Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning Saturday at Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey, the Reds broke out at the plate in a big way in front of 16,886 fans.
Jesse Winker ended the no-hit bid with a solo homer in the sixth inning and Derek Dietrich knocked Wainwright out of the game with another home run in the seventh. Wainwright allowed three hits in six innings, but the two homers ignited the offense in a 5-2 victory to open this weekend’s two-game Mexico Series.
Winker has homered in three of the last four games, all opposite-field swings to left field.
